Riding in the Spirit of Chardi Kala
On Sunday, August 17, the Sikh Cycling Club came together in California’s Silicon Valley for a ride that was more than just miles on the road. Starting at the Milpitas Gurdwara, we traced a route through Mountain View, East Palo Alto, Shoreline Park, over the Dumbarton Bridge, and back through Newark, Union City, and Fremont before returning to the Gurdwara.
This wasn’t only about distance or elevation. It was about riding in Chardi Kala — the Sikh spirit of ever-rising optimism, resilience, and joy.
A Ride That Tells Our Story
Our Nishan kit isn’t just cycling gear. It’s a statement. Along the way, our kit caught peoples’ attention. They asked about who we were, what we were riding for, and what Chardi Kala means. Each answer sparked conversations about Sikh history, values, and community.
This is what Sikh Cycling Club is about: being visible, proud, and united on and off the bike.
Building Community, One Ride at a Time
Every time we gather, we strengthen bonds of sangat (community). We ride together to support each other, to celebrate our shared spirit, and to remind ourselves that cycling can be a platform for storytelling and representation.
As we crossed the Dumbarton Bridge, the headwinds were strong, but so was the energy. That’s Chardi Kala in action: pushing forward with optimism, no matter the challenge.
