Honoring the anniversary of the 2012 Oak Creek, WI mass shooting![]() On Sunday, August 5, 2012, a white supremacist walked into the Oak Creek, Wisconsin Gurdwara and went on a shooting rampage, killing seven members of the sangat while they prepared for Sunday services. Shocking Sikhs around the world, and the American community at large, it was arguably one of the worst attacks on Sikhs in the United States in history. We remember those that lost their lives: Paramjit Kaur Saini, Baba Punjab Singh, Sita Singh, Ranjit Singh, Prakash Singh and Suveg Singh Khattra, and Satwant Singh Kaleka (who was killed as he fought off the shooter). We also honor those who were injured, including Oak Creek police officer Lt. Brian Murphy who sustained multiple gunshot wounds as he confronted the attacker. This attack changed the Sikh community in this country in significant ways, but also demonstrated the Sikh spirit of chardi kala and resilience. 12 years later, we still remember. |

Thanks to everyone who joined our Miri Piri Ride in Milpitas, CA on July 20!
| “Miri Piri” is a concept initiated by the sixth Guru of the Sikhs, Guru Hargobind. After the execution of his predecessor, Guru Arjun, by the rulers of India, Guru Hargobind donned two swords in 1606 to symbolize “Miri” and “Piri” — temporal and spiritual authority. It was a declaration of Sikh sovereignty and that the Sikh community was no longer to only focus on spiritual development, but also political development as well. We carry and celebrate this legacy today. On Saturday, July 20, we returned to the San Francisco Bay Area to commemorate Miri Piri Divas. It was a beautiful day to come together in this spirit and ride almost 50 miles to celebrate this legacy. |
